From Harare to Teddington, this is Mark’s story
Mark is one of our adult Riding for the Disabled Association members. In this article, his sister Avril shares his story:
With Bella outside Ham House
Mark was born in Zimbabwe 41 years ago, his start in life was filled with challenges. At birth he weighed just three pounds and was diagnosed with microcephaly and autism. With every milestone, he defied medical expectations: he walked, he talked, and as he grew, he even learned to swim.
One of the most transformative parts of Mark’s life has been his connection with animals. Riding began as therapy, to strengthen his balance and core, but it quickly grew into something more profound. Horses seemed to ground him, giving him confidence, focus, and a sense of freedom that nothing else could. He started with the RDA in Harare in 1994 until they closed the program around 2000, after which he did casual rides weekly in a game park.
Tragedy struck when Mark’s father passed away suddenly. Mark and our mum made the difficult move back to the UK to be closer to me and my family. It was a huge adjustment. We set out to find a new riding community for him. That’s how we discovered Park Lane Stables. Mark joined in March 2024, and the stables quickly became his new sanctuary. On Thursdays he rides with the weekly group, and on Fridays he takes part in stable sessions where they dance and go for walks in Bushy Park. Thursdays has recently become a riding and crafts session, which he loves. He is so proud of his achievements – these days are now the highlight of his week. After a Thursday ride, he talks about it non-stop for the next couple of days, sharing every detail with joy and pride.
Celebrating with Lexy after the RDA Regionals
The progress Mark has made since joining has been incredible. Riding has not only helped physically but also boosted his confidence and independence. He competed in the 2025 Greater London Region RDA Qualifiers – winning a first place prize! And he qualified for the 2025 RDA National Championships, where he brought home a fourth prize. Those moments were unforgettable, with tears of happiness flowing freely.
Watching Mark on horseback is, for the family, nothing short of miraculous. None of this would be possible without the volunteers and community at Park Lane Stables. Mark adores Martina and Aimee along with the other regular staff/volunteers who make him feel welcome and valued. Park Lane is not just a stables, it is family to him. It has given him freedom, friendship, and the chance to show the world his incredible spirit. His journey is living proof that with love, perseverance, and the right support, there are no limits to what can be achieved.
Thank you to the whole Park Lane RDA Community for making this possible.
